The Golden Mask is a National Theatre Award which was founded in 1994 by the Theatre Union of Russia and is given to productions in all genres of theatre art: drama, opera, ballet, operetta and musical, and puppet theatre.

The Golden Mask is also an All-Russian Theatre Festival that, in the spring of each year, presents to the capital the most significant performances from all over Russia.

The main activity of the Golden Mask Festival is to organise the annual Festival and Award Ceremony. At the same time, the Golden Mask organises a number of important theatre events, such as:
- Presentation of the best Russian theatres in various cities of Russia and internationally;
- Touring events of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theatres in Moscow;
- Project -The Legendary performances of the XX century-;
- The PRO-TEATR Performing Arts Market
- The Russian Case - a showcase of Russian theatre addressed to foreign visitors of the Golden Mask Festival.

The Golden Mask is holding educational and publishing activities within the special programs. The Golden Mask has celebrated this year its' 15th anniversary, today it is not only the largest festival of Russia as well as the authoritative and prestigious award in the field of theatrical art, but theit's also a present cultural institute which carries out a complex of the major problems aimed for the development of theatre.

Festival Golden Mask in Estonia in 2005 became the first foreign project and this year is celebrating the fifth anniversary.

Festival Golden Mask in Estonia is the most important theatrical event of year, interest in which unites Russian and Estonian public. The festival shows the best Russian performances of last seasons which have become the nominees and winners of the Russian Festival Golden Mask. All performances aer carry out with simultaneous interpretation to the Estonian language. Seminars, the master-classes, lectures are also organized during the festival.

Festival is promoting the strengthening of indissoluble cultural relations between the countries and an establishment of creative contacts between figures of theatre. Festivals arouse huge interest of public, mass-media, theatrical community. It is certain that festivals are carried out at the high state level and at the same time have a wide public resonance.

The festival is held within the limits of the interstate agreement on long-term cooperation between the Ministries of culture of Estonia and Russia, with support of the mayoralty of Tallinn. Assistance render also Embassies of the two countries, -Kultuurkapital- fund.

Besides that, Festival Golden Mask in Estonia represents the Estonian theatres in Moscow. In March 2009, at the 15th anniversary Festival in Russia three performances of the Estonian theatres have been shown in hors concours program The Mask Plus. They were: one-act ballets (-Hamlet- and -Werewolf-) by -Estonia- Theatre, N.Gogol's -Players- production of the Puppet theater and performance -GEP- by NO99 Theatre.
